Sweden is launching its "gigantic factory" of electric batteries to compete with Tesla.

Updated: Jan 3, 2022

The Swedish group Northvolt has just put into service a "mega factory" for the production of electric batteries. An entirely European factory. It is the first of its kind against the Asian and American giants.

The aim is to be able to supply the European market with electric batteries produced on the old continent.

Northvolt is starting up its electric battery "giga-factory" with the assembly of a first cell at its Skelleftea factory, 200 kilometers from the Arctic Circle.

This is "a new chapter in European industrial history. This cell is the first to have been entirely designed, developed and assembled by a battery company based in Europe, ”affirms the group, which is pleased with it.

Its advantage also lies in the mode of production. We know that making batteries is very energy intensive, and sometimes with very carbonaceous energy. However, the Swedish group's plant is powered by 100% renewable energy, notably through hydroelectricity.

It will also produce batteries from at least 50% recycled materials. Nickel, manganese or cobalt will be recovered from used batteries. A more obvious compared to extraction not only for the environment, of course, but also for a truly strategic autonomy when we are talking about relatively rare materials. The site should be able to equip one million vehicles each year. It is targeting 300,000 within 2 years.
